The "Rinaldo Piaggio" company is founded in Sestri Ponente (Genoa, Italy).

Rinaldo Piaggio sets up "Piaggio & Co," to specialise in ship furniture and interiors.

1901
Entry into the passenger rail car business. 

1906
Rinaldo Piaggio signs an agreement with the city council of Finalmarina (now Finale Ligure) to open a manufacturing plant for the construction and maintenance of goods vans, luxury coaches, engines, trams and special trucks.

1915
This activity is expanded to aeronautics and the manufacture of the first aircraft.

1921
The Company becomes part of SAICM - Società Anonima Italiana Costruzioni Aeronautiche - (Joint Stock Italian Aircraft Building company) of Marina (Pisa).

Rinaldo Piaggio takes over a small plant in Pontedera which is to become the heart of aeronautical production.

1922
Merger with "Pegna-Bonmartini" of Rome. 

The first P1-3 aircraft is built and the advanced Piaggio design goes on to set the many prestigious world records.

1924
Incorporation of SANA, "Società Anonima Navigazione Aerea" (Air Navigation Joint Stock Company), in Genoa. Acquisition of CMN ("Costruzioni Meccaniche Nazionali", National Mechanical Construction), Pondera .

1927
Wind tunnel installed in Finale Ligure to test aircraft models .

1929
The P7, a futuristic seaplane, is built to win the Schneider Cup.

1931
The first "Piaggio" engine at the beginning of the 1930's makes Piaggio a self-sufficient engineering concern.

1937
Manufacture of the first PXI and P108 four-engined aircraft .

1938
15th January, Rinaldo Piaggio dies in Genoa, aged 71 .

1946
Introduction of the Vespa motor scooter puts Italy on wheels after world war II.

1948
The amphibious P136 aircraft is unveiled .

1949
American version of the P136, the Royal Gull aircraft is launched.

1950
Design of the P148 training aircraft.

1953
Launch of the P149 aircraft. The P149D is manufactured under licence (in Germany).

1955
Licensed production of the Avco Lycoming T53 and T55 turbine aircraft engine.

1957
Creation of the P166 and P166M aircraft for the Italian Military Air Force.

1960
Licensed production of the Rolls-Royce turbojet Viper and subsequent versions.

1964
Piaggio’s aeronautical division becomes an independent company. 

The company separates: one facility dedicated to Vespa and individual mobility, the other to aeronautical markets. "Industrie Aeronautiche e Meccaniche Rinaldo Piaggio S.p.A "(IAM Rinaldo Piaggio) is founded.

1964
Launch of the PD.808 twin-engined jet aircraft as a joint project with Douglas Aircraft.

Component production is undertaken to support the F-104, MB 326, G222 and MRCA Tornado programs.

1978
Piaggio’s first turboprop aircraft to be designed and built (P166 DL3).

1979
Commencement of advanced studies, eventually resulting in the P180 aircraft.

1980
Headquarters move from Genoa to Sestri. Agreement with "Microturbo" to make new types of APU;

With Rolls-Royce for the MK1004 version of the Gem 2 turbo shaft engine.
Piaggio became a member of the International Association for the Spey 807 engine of the AMX programme.

1986
First flight of the P180 Avanti prototype aircraft.

1990
Certification of the P180 to FAA / FAR23 and RAI (Italian Airworthiness Authority) standards.

1992
Maiden flight into space of the Deployable Retrievable Boom, designed and developed by Piaggio, on board the shuttle Atlantis.

1998
The company is reorganized in its present form as Piaggio Aero Industries SpA. Piero Ferrari becomes the new President of Piaggio Aero Industries and José Di Mase the new CEO.

1999
Piaggio Aero Industries S.p.A. returns to the annual NBAA business aviation show after a long absence.

2000
The Ferrari racing team chooses the P180 Avanti, operating it in Ferrari house colours.  

With new orders and new capital from shareholders, the P180 production line is restarted. Subsidiaries Piaggio Aero France and Piaggio America (link to Piaggio America) are incorporated.

Agreement with LHTEC: Piaggio Aero builds the T800, the most advanced engine in the world.

2001
Formula 1 champion, Michael Shumacher endorses the P-180 as the “Ferrari of the Sky.”
Inauguration of Piaggio’s Naples R&D centre for medium and long term high-tech research.

Piaggio Aero signs an agreement with Brit Air providing line maintenance for the CRJ700 aircraft.

2002
Agreement is ratified with Sky Line Aviation (later to become Avantair Inc.) for eight P180 Avantis for a new fractional ownership company.

The P180 Avanti establishes new speed records in its class.

2003
Sviluppo Italia becomes a shareholder in Piaggio Aero.

Piaggio delivers the first P180 Air Ambulance to Poland Air Rescue.

Piaggio delivers the first P180 to the Italian Fire Brigade Corps.

Agreement between Piaggio Aero and Pratt & Whitney for the Joint Strike Fighter Programme, the military aircraft of the future.

2004
Piaggio Aero signs an agreement with Avantair, the US fractional ownership company for 29 more P180 Avantis, in a deal worth $200 million.

 Piaggio Aero sells the first six P180 Avantis in Germany.

 Piaggio Aero delivers to an Avanti to Euro Skylink, the first P180 certified for operations in the UK.

The first P180 Avanti is delivered to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for general transport and liaison duties across Canada.

Piaggio Aero Industries announces the new P180 Avanti II, (link to product P180 Avanti), the latest version of its prestigious aircraft, the most modern and the fastest turboprop available in the world.

Piaggio Aero signs an agreement with Pratt & Whitney for the production of components for the F135 jet engine to power all versions of the F-35 aircraft.

2005
The UAE military chooses Piaggio Aero to supply new T55-L-712E engines installed on the CH47 helicopter fleet.

Piaggio Aero Industries delivers the first P166 “DP1” aircraft to the Italian “Guardia di Finanza,” a result of an innovative mid-life updating programme.

 Piaggio Aero Industries delivers the first P180 Avanti to the “Corpo Forestale dello Stato” (Italian Forest Ranger).
Piaggio America delivers the one hundredth Avanti manufactured to Avantair, Inc.
