The company was founded in 1998 through the efforts of a consortium of businessmen headed by engineer Piero Ferrari (Vice President of Ferrari S.p.A.), who is its President, and engineer Josè Di Mase. The consortium acquired the assets of the celebrated Rinaldo Piaggio mechanical and aeronautics industries.

Highly prestigious names have invested in Piaggio Aero Industries S.p.A.over the years. At present, its body of shareholders is composed of the Di Mase and Ferrari families, the Mubadala Development Company - a strategic investment company owned by the Abu Dhabi government, which purchased a stake in Piaggio Aero in 2005 - and Tata Limited, a British company in the Tata Group that has been a shareholder in Piaggio Aero since 2009.
