The company was founded in 1998 through the efforts of a consortium of businessmen headed by engineer Piero Ferrari (Vice President of Ferrari S.p.A.), who is its President, and engineer Josè Di Mase. The consortium acquired the assets of the celebrated Rinaldo Piaggio mechanical and aeronautics industries.

Its shareholders' structure is composed by the Ferrari and Di Mase families, Mubadala Aerospace - a Business Unit of the Abu Dhabi-based Mubadala Development Company, which purchased a stake in Piaggio Aero in 2006 - and Tata Limited, a British company in the Tata Group that has been a shareholder in Piaggio Aero since 2009.
